{hook} The Exploration System

As part of my graduation, I developed a system which allows to experience the inside forces in build structures. The physical structure is combined with information about the distribution of forces by sensing and visualization modules. Thus a real and dynamic perception of tension and pressure is possible. Therefore an intuitive way of collaborative constructing is achieved in workshops. The best structure can be learned by trial and error.

The system offers the possibility of learning by doing in fields like light weight construction, or adaptable architecture. The physical structure of the system offers the possibility for collaborative work.

Further more it is possible to do an on line evaluation of the structure by the Computer. Different designs can be easily evaluated under changing environment forces. Computer aided design can be explored by the interaction of calculation and construction.
Further development currently takes place at the Institute for Technology oriented Product innovation at the HFG Offenbach.

Further development:

Smaller modules to provide to allow more complex structures.
The next module set, will be realized in a smaller scale, while the readings of the sensors will be transmitted via air. The should improve the possibility to build and test complexer structure’s.

From visualizing forces to modelling with forces.
One of the next things which should be implemented is the possibility to control active elements within the model to construct scenarios of adaptive architecture. This would allow to “play” with environmental forces and understand them as an active part which interacts with the build structure.
